Kicking with my left foot

Saturday 1st August

Late start for all the guys in Stuart's room today. When I arrived at 11.15 they were all resting in bed, had been up and attended to their personal hygiene and decided to take it easy. Tis a lot more relaxed on the weekend, no physio, OT or other appointments to be kept. Stuart was in shorts and put some undies on, the first time in 8 weeks. They are not allowed to wear underclothes or have pockets on the back of their pants early in their recovery and rehab because of the risk of getting pressure sores.

Stuart and I meet Amy, Tom and Marg Dawson downstairs when they arrived from Woollongong and we wandered down to the Forum for lunch. It was another beautiful sunny day, just lovely to be outside. It was the place to be, we caught up with four other patients from 7D who were out enjoying the day and having a meal. Tom and Marg were amazed at Stuart's wheelchair skills and held their breath when he jumped down the first gutter and started to roll down the hill on his back wheels. After saying goodbye Tom and Marg we went back down the hill to watch the football. North Sydney 1sts defeated Sydney Uni by 1 point. It was entertaining to watch and we all got quite involved in the game. Tristan and Meaghan caught up with us there. Stuart was able to show them how he can kick with his left foot.....

It got quite cool sitting out so as soon as the match was over we went back to 7D and Stuart got ready to go out for tea. Triston and Meaghan drove us back to Mary and Sid's, he was able to transfer into the Honda CRV easily. This was his first attempt at going to a private residence for an outing and he managed very well. Had to go up a couple of steps backwards with some help as they were to steep to jump. He enjoyed stretching out on the lounge, although it was a bit tricky getting back into his chair. Hard to get enough lift on the soft cushions. Was great though having him sit at the table with us all and share a lovely home cooked meal. Stuart was getting rather tired by the time we dropped him back to RNS, am sure he will sleep well tonight. Might have a quiet day tomorrow!!!
